About the Running Pace Calculator

Pace is the runner's currency, and this running pace calculator converts any run into it instantly. Enter a distance, choose kilometres or miles, and type your finish time in hours, minutes and seconds: you get your pace per kilometre or per mile in the familiar min:sec format runners use, plus your average speed in km/h or mph for dialing in treadmill settings.

Use it after a run to log your splits, or before a race to translate a goal time into the pace you must hold — the difference between a controlled first half and blowing up at 30 km. It works for track repeats, parkruns, marathons, and even cycling or walking. Free, instant, and entirely in your browser with nothing to install.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my running pace?

Divide your total time by the distance: pace = time ÷ distance. Running 10 km in 50 minutes gives 50 ÷ 10 = 5 minutes per kilometre, shown as 5:00/km. The calculator handles the awkward minutes-and-seconds arithmetic and displays the result the way runners actually read it.

What is the difference between pace and speed?

They are inverses of each other. Pace is time per distance (minutes per kilometre or mile), which runners prefer; speed is distance per time (km/h or mph), which treadmills and cyclists use. A 5:00/km pace equals 12 km/h. This calculator always shows both, so no conversion is needed.

How do I convert pace per kilometre to pace per mile?

Multiply the per-kilometre pace by 1.609, since a mile is 1.609 kilometres. A 5:00/km pace works out to about 8:03 per mile. The easier route is the unit toggle: switch between km and mi and the calculator redoes the conversion for you exactly.

What pace do I need for a sub-2-hour half marathon?

A half marathon is 21.0975 km, so finishing under 120 minutes requires faster than 5:41 per kilometre, or roughly 9:09 per mile. Enter your own goal time and the race distance to get your exact target pace — then aim to run even splits rather than starting too fast.

Can I use this for walking, cycling or swimming?

Yes. The math is identical for any activity measured in distance and time: enter a hike, a bike ride or an open-water swim and you get pace and speed the same way. For cycling the speed figure is usually the one to watch; for swimming, scale distances down accordingly.
